Ironmen Outpace Flyers After Stormy Return
After a week of weather-induced postponements, the Goderich Flyers returned to action on December 7th but were unable to shake the rust, falling 4-1 to the Wingham Ironmen at home. Despite flashes of promise, the Flyers couldn’t weather Wingham’s early offensive surge or capitalize on power-play opportunities, extending their struggles against division rivals.
First Period
Wingham struck first at 6:43 on the power play when Jesse Coombs buried a setup from Tanner Dietz. The Ironmen doubled their lead later in the period as Adam MacRobbie converted on a feed from Tyson Fischer at 15:29. The Flyers found it difficult to generate offense, managing only six shots in the opening frame.
Second Period
The Ironmen came out strong to start the second, with Austin Becker extending their lead to 3-0 just 28 seconds in. Coombs added his second goal of the night at 7:27, putting Wingham up 4-0. Despite the deficit, the Flyers found some life midway through the period. At 14:38, Trent Carter capitalized on a turnover deep in the Wingham zone, pouncing on a loose puck and firing it home for his sixth goal of the season. Jackson Andrews earned an assist on the play. Goderich generated some momentum in the second period, recording 11 shots, but still trailed by three heading into the third.
Third Period
The Flyers pressed hard in the third period, outshooting Wingham 12-9. Midway through the period, Goderich pulled their goalie during a Wingham penalty to create a 6-on-4 advantage. Showing tremendous discipline and defensive effort, the Flyers managed to play the final six minutes of the game without a goaltender while preventing an empty-netter. Despite their aggressive push, they couldn’t find the goals needed to close the gap, as Wingham’s defense and goaltender Noah Ricci held firm.
Final Thoughts
This game marked another frustrating outing for the Flyers, who continue to struggle with consistency. The power play, a season-long concern, went 0-for-4, and an early penalty kill lapse allowed Wingham to grab the momentum. On a positive note, Trent Carter’s goal demonstrated the Flyers’ ability to force turnovers and capitalize on opportunities. Christian DeJong stopped 34 of 38 shots, holding Wingham off the board after their fourth goal and giving his team a chance to battle back.
The Flyers will look to rebound quickly as they host the Kincardine Bulldogs on Sunday, December 8th, and attempt to regain momentum heading into a busy December schedule.
