Flyers Struggle in Wingham with a 5-1 Loss

A group of Goderich Flyers players, dressed in white jerseys with gold and black trim, stand in a line on the ice with their helmets placed in front of them. They hold their hockey sticks vertically, resting on the ice, as they face the stands during a moment of respect or anthem. The arena is sparsely populated, with a few spectators seated in the bleachers behind them. The players are focused and still, creating a solemn, unified image on the rink.

Flyers Struggle in Wingham with a 5-1 Loss

The Goderich Flyers faced a tough road game last night, falling 5-1 to the Wingham Ironmen. Netminder Logan Bromley returned to the lineup after sustaining an injury early in the first game of the regular season but the Flyers struggled to contain Wingham’s offense, which took control early on and maintained pressure throughout the game.

First Period: Early Deficit
Wingham came out strong, outshooting Goderich 19-3 in the first period and establishing a 3-0 lead. Jesse Coombs opened the scoring at 12:21, assisted by Tanner Dietz, and struck again at 16:14, this time with help from Tate Berfelz. Wade Robinson extended the lead further at 17:03, assisted by Tayt Bramhill and Adam MacRobbie, putting the Flyers in a difficult position.

Second Period: Ironmen Extend the Lead
The Flyers generated more offense in the second period, recording 12 shots, but Wingham’s defense remained solid. Austin Becker added a fourth goal for Wingham at 14:05, with assists from Micah Kraayenbrink and Carter Coates. Goderich’s power play, with only one opportunity in the game, could not convert to swing the momentum.

Third Period: Flyers Avoid the Shutout
Wingham scored again early in the third at 4:37, with an unassisted goal from Adam MacRobbie. The Flyers managed to avoid the shutout at 8:53 when rookie Kingston Powell scored his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Ryan McGee and Austin Waite. Despite a few more chances, Goderich couldn’t close the gap, ending with a 5-1 loss.

Final Thoughts
This loss drops the Flyers to 7th place in the division, just one point ahead of last-place Walkerton. With an extended stretch of seven road games over the past four weeks, the team is hoping for a much-needed rebound tonight at home against Kincardine. After dropping two straight games to the Bulldogs in shootouts, the Flyers are looking for retribution on home ice.

Flyers Scoring Summary:

  • 3rd Period: Kingston Powell (9) – Assists: Ryan McGee (6), Austin Waite (4)
