Flyers Soar to 7-5 Victory Over Hanover in Thrilling Battle
The Goderich Flyers pulled off a major 7-5 road win over the Hanover Barons, never trailing throughout the game. The goals went back and forth, but the Flyers scored the final two in the third period to seal the victory. Hanover, coming off an 11-2 win the previous night, was a tough opponent, but Goderich remained calm and disciplined, stepping up every time Hanover gained momentum.
First Period: Flyers Take Early Lead
The Flyers opened the scoring at 6:22, with Kingston Powell netting his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Iain MacIsaac and Kyle Smeltzer. Hanover responded with a power play goal from Mark McIntosh at 12:30, but Goderich reclaimed the lead at 15:44 through Leland Weber’s first of the season, assisted by Ryan McGee and captain Carson Stutzman. The Flyers led 2-1 at the end of the period.
Second Period: Back-and-Forth Action
Hanover tied the game again at 8:26 with another power play goal from McIntosh. Goderich responded at 13:39 when Kaden Powell scored his first PJHL goal, assisted by Smeltzer. The Flyers held onto a 3-2 lead going into the third period.
Third Period: Flyers Take Control
Hanover tied the game once more at 5:13, but the Flyers regained the lead at 7:05 with Kaeden MacDonald’s goal, assisted by Jackson Andrews and Stutzman. Trent Carter added a power play goal at 11:52, assisted by MacDonald.
Hanover tied the game for a fifth time at 18:33 and with the game hanging in the balance, it was Kingston Powell who secured the game-winning goal at 19:17, scoring his second of the game, assisted by Iain MacIsaac and Trent Carter. Stutzman added an empty-netter at 19:28 to finalize the 7-5 victory.
Final Thoughts
The Flyers struggled on the penalty kill but showed incredible poise throughout the game. Christian DeJong made several key saves to keep the team in the game, while Hanover seemed thrown off by Goderich’s composure. Every time Hanover gained momentum, the Flyers responded with a calm, disciplined approach that paid off with a big win. Rookie Kingston Powell led the way with two goals and an assist, while captain Carson Stutzman added four points.
Assistant coach Ken Jacklin praised the team’s performance, saying, “It was a great team effort with lots of energy from start to finish. We came into the game knowing Hanover was a strong team, and we stayed with them the whole way. Even when they pushed back, we didn’t stop. It was a true team game.”
The Flyers will be back on home ice tomorrow, Sunday, September 29th, at 2:30 pm for a matchup against the Mount Forest Patriots.
