Flyers’ Return Home Marred by Bulldogs’ Offense
In their first home game after a month-long road stretch, the Goderich Flyers faced a tough Kincardine Bulldogs team at the Maitland Recreation Centre. Despite a determined effort and outshooting the Bulldogs in the third period, the Flyers ultimately fell 7-2.
First Period: Kincardine set the tone early, taking advantage of a shorthanded opportunity to open the scoring at 7:19 with Caeleb Bowler netting his tenth of the season. The Bulldogs continued to press, with Bowler adding another goal at 15:12, assisted by Aidan Yarde and Trent Houghton. Just before the period ended, Keaton Vanderhoek extended Kincardine’s lead to 3-0 at 19:31. The Flyers managed ten shots on goal in the period but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Second Period: The Bulldogs added to their lead in the second period. Wyatt Thomas scored at 11:52, followed by a goal from Bryce Martin at 14:23, making it 5-0. Christian DeJong, who started in goal for the Flyers, was tested heavily and made 26 saves by the end of his time in the net. Kincardine’s defense was solid, holding Goderich off the scoresheet through 40 minutes despite a series of power-play chances.
Third Period: The Bulldogs scored two quick goals, including another shorthanded goal by Yarde at 3:38 and a goal by Houghton at 5:01, extending their lead to 7-0 and resulting in a Flyers’ goaltending change. Logan Bromley made 15 saves through the remainder of the period. The Flyers finally responded with a pair of goals midway through the third. Trent Carter scored his fifth of the season at 11:15, assisted by Iain MacIsaac and Jack Stecho. Then, at 15:26, Jeremy Hamilton found the net, assisted by Kingston Powell.
Final Thoughts: This was a challenging night for the Flyers, who found themselves behind early and struggled to recover. Kincardine’s ability to capitalize on both shorthanded and even-strength opportunities proved decisive. While the Flyers generated offensive pressure late in the game, they’ll look to tighten up defensively and find consistency on special teams moving forward. The power play remains an area of concern, with the Flyers unable to convert on six chances and giving up two shorthanded goals.
