Flyers Fall 5-3 to the Mount Forest Patriots

In their third game in three days, the Goderich Flyers came up short in a hard-fought 5-3 loss to the Mount Forest Patriots. Both teams were coming off high-scoring games the night before, and Goderich was looking to stay in the win column but couldn’t hold off a late surge from Mount Forest.

First Period: Early Goals Set the Tone
Mount Forest wasted no time, opening the scoring just 14 seconds into the game when a dump-in bounced off the corner boards and into the slot, leading to a quick goal by Tyler Copeland. Goderich responded at 15:22 with a near-impossible goal from captain Carson Stutzman, who chased down a potential icing and scored from the goal line, assisted by Kaeden MacDonald and Jackson Andrews. The period ended tied 1-1.

Second Period: Flyers Battle Back
Goderich took the lead at 2:01 of the second period when Jared Houghton scored his first of the season after a battle in the corner left the puck at the face-off dot. His shot beat the goaltender, assisted by Jeremy Hamilton and Jackson Andrews. Mount Forest tied it at 9:13 after a power play scramble in front of Flyers goalie Brady Galbraith produced multiple shots and rebounds, with Will Lewis eventually finding the back of the net. The Flyers reclaimed the lead on the power play at 14:21, when defence-man Austin Waite blasted a shot from just inside the blue line through the goalie’s pads, assisted by Kingston Powell and MacDonald.

Third Period: Mount Forest Pulls Ahead
Mount Forest tied the game again just 17 seconds into the third period, with Luke Eurig scoring off the opening faceoff. At 6:29, Eurig added another power play goal, giving Mount Forest the lead once again. Kingston Powell’s undisciplined penalty for high sticking after the whistle gave Mount Forest the power play that resulted in the go-ahead goal. The Patriots sealed the win at 19:03 with an empty-net goal from Gavin Downs.

Final Thoughts
The Flyers showed resilience and grit throughout, especially on the power play, but costly penalties and a few bounces went Mount Forest’s way. With a tired squad playing their third game in three days, the Flyers battled hard but ultimately couldn’t hold off Mount Forest. Captain Carson Stutzman and Kingston Powell continue to lead the offense, while Austin Waite and Jared Houghton each got their first goals of the season.

The Flyers return home next Saturday, October 5th, at 8:00 pm to face the Wingham Ironmen at the Maitland Recreation Centre. They will then hit the road on Friday, October 11th, for a rematch against Hanover before returning home on Saturday, October 12th, for a matchup with the Walkerton Capitals.
