Bulldogs Edge Flyers in OT Thriller
The Goderich Flyers came up just short in an electrifying back-and-forth matchup against the Kincardine Bulldogs, falling 6-5 in overtime on December 8th at the Maitland Recreation Centre. Despite mounting a fierce comeback after a rough start, the Flyers were unable to secure the win in a game that featured everything from big goals to physical play.
First Period
The Bulldogs opened the scoring just 1:04 into the game with Wyatt Thomas finding the back of the net off a feed from Jordan Beisel. Kincardine doubled their lead midway through the frame, with Caeleb Bowler converting a setup from Trent Houghton. The Flyers struggled to find their rhythm in the opening period, managing just 10 shots to Kincardine’s 16.
Second Period
Kincardine extended their lead to 3-0 early in the second when Houghton capitalized on a feed from Jordan Moulton. But the Flyers showed resilience, beginning their comeback with Ryan McGee’s goal at 5:50, assisted by Austin Waite. Just two minutes later, Carter Servais restored the Bulldogs’ three-goal cushion.
The Flyers pushed back hard late in the period, with Waite scoring at 15:24 and Kaden Powell adding another in the final seconds, assisted by McGee, to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into the third.
Third Period
Momentum stayed with Goderich early in the final frame as Jack Stecho tied the game 4-4 on the power play at 7:42, thanks to a sharp setup by Nate Bloemberg and Kaeden MacDonald. Kincardine responded minutes later with Aidan Yarde’s tally, but the Flyers again fought back. Bloemberg’s first goal as a Flyer, assisted by Jackson Andrews and Leland Weber at 17:36, forced overtime.
Overtime
The extra frame ended quickly, with Bowler scoring the game-winning goal for the Bulldogs just 1:10 in. Despite the loss, the Flyers showed heart and determination throughout, battling back from an early hole and going toe-to-toe with a strong Kincardine squad.
Final Thoughts
The Flyers displayed plenty of grit and determination, clawing back from a three-goal deficit to force overtime. Their power play contributed a key goal, and Bloemberg continued to make an immediate impact with a goal and an assist in his third game with the team. Christian DeJong, who came into the game in relief, made 25 saves on 28 shots. The team’s effort was commendable, but the inability to capitalize on late opportunities sealed their fate.
